Departmental placement for the Arabic Language Program is accomplished through the Computer Oral Proficiency Instrument (COPI) for Arabic. COPI is designed to assess the oral proficiency of students who are native or near-native English speakers learning Arabic. The COPI's semi-adaptive design adjusts test difficulty level to students' proficiency levels. Performance on the COPI is rated according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines–Speaking.
How long is the test?
The COPI itself is not a timed exam, but the response time for each question is timed, with the allowed amount of time varying depending on the difficulty level of the prompt. The test averages about 45 – 60 minutes.
How do I take it?
COPI examinations are administered in the LRC — AMB Room 6. Please click below to reserve a seat for the COPI Exam:
What do I need to bring to the exam?
Bring your UT ID.
What do I do after the exam?
You will need to contact Dr. Drew Paul in the Arabic Language Program to advise him that you have taken the exam. Dr. Paul will then arrange a schedule to access and rate your performance on the COPI and deliver results to you so that you can register for the appropriate course.
